Introducing the KAP Workbook: A Guide for Your Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Journey
If you're preparing for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), or you're already in the middle of it, you may be looking for something to help you make sense of the experience as it unfolds. That's exactly why I created the KAP Workbook: a 250-page guide designed to walk alongside you through every phase of your ketamine journey, from your very first questions to long after your last integration session.
As we move into fall, I'm offering 15% off both the print and digital editions through September 30th (use code FALLKAP15), and the workbook is available for purchase at https://www.courageousyoutherapy.com/category/kapworkbooks, more on that below.
But first, let's talk about what's actually inside.
What Is a KAP Workbook, and Why Does It Matter?
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is powerful, but it's also often disorienting. You're not just taking a medication... you're doing deep psychological work, while your nervous system is in an altered state. Research consistently shows that the quality of preparation and integration around a ketamine session matters just as much as the medicine session itself. The KAP workbook gives you a structured, tangible place to do that work: setting intentions, tracking insights, learning what to expect, and translating what comes up into real, lasting change in your daily life. The KAP Workbook was built from my own clinical work as a therapist specializing in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and it's meant to feel like a steady hand supporting you along the way.
What's Inside the 250 Pages
The workbook follows the full arc of a KAP journey, in seven parts, so you can pick it up wherever you currently are at in your journey and keep returning to it session after session.
Part 1: Preparation Is Key. This is your orientation to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy itself including what ketamine actually is, a look at its history (including an important section honoring the Indigenous roots of psychedelic healing long before it entered Western medicine), why having a therapist present changes the outcome, and a plain-language explanation of neuroplasticity using a sledding-down-a-snowy-hill metaphor to describe how ketamine helps loosen old mental patterns and lay down new ones. You'll also find common myths debunked, an honest look at what ketamine can actually feel like, and a comparison of the different routes of administration (IV, IM, oral/sublingual, and intranasal) with guided reflection prompts to help you and your care team figure out which route fits you.
Part 2: Laying the Groundwork. Here the focus shifts to the lifestyle foundations that shape how much you get out of your KAP journey including sleep, nutrition, movement, nature, and community. I've included several activities along the way such as a Wheel of Health self-assessment where you rate yourself across eight areas of wellbeing. You'll revisit this same wheel at the very end of the workbook, so you can see side-by-side how far you've come. This part also walks you through setting real intentions (and the practice of setting them, then releasing your grip on the outcome).
Part 3: Getting Everything Ready. This section covers "set and setting" which are your internal mindset and your physical environment, plus practical tools like sample playlists and a guided activity for building your own, a "Letter to Your Future Self" exercise you'll write before your first session and reopen after your last, and clear guidance on pre-dosing do's and don'ts.
Part 4: Dosing Day Essentials. As dosing day approaches, this section prepares you for what dissociation actually feels like, how to manage nausea, how to navigate a difficult experience if one comes up, and how to choose (and set boundaries with) a support person or chaperone.
Parts 5 & 6: It's Dosing Time / Deepening Your Dosing. This is the heart of the workbook where I've included individual trackers for each of your dosing sessions (intentions, treatment plan notes, a pre-session checklist, post-session reflection questions, and a set-and-setting review), paired with twelve somatic regulation practices woven throughout the workbook (things like box breathing, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, havening touch, and progressive muscle relaxation, among others). Each comes with clear steps and guidance on exactly how and when to use it. Integration is explored across six domains (mind, body, spirit, lifestyle, relationships, and nature), with creative options along the way like art, photography, and nature walks as integration tools.
Part 7: Ongoing Integration. The final section supports the weeks and months after your last session where insights either become lasting change or they can quietly fade. It includes a self-compassion section for the shame stories that can surface during this work, the moment you reopen your sealed letter to your past self, your post-program Wheel of Health to compare against where you started, guidance on sustainable daily micro-practices, and an honest look at what to do if old patterns start creeping back in. The workbook closes with a research appendix citing the clinical literature behind everything covered such as mechanism of action, clinical efficacy, neuroplasticity, and more, for anyone who wants to go deeper.

For clinicians: if you're building out your KAP practice, this workbook can also serve as a ready-made client resource and something to hand out during onboarding, reference in session, or offer as structured homework between appointments.
