Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) serves as a complementary approach to psychotherapy, aimed at maximizing the positive effects of your treatment.
Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective treatment for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD when used under the guidance of clinicians. Its antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects are rapid, often beginning within 1-2 hours after treatment. Ketamine works by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain and indirectly stimulating AMPA receptors, which helps form new synaptic connections and strengthens neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. This action enhances overall neuroplasticity, leading to lasting improvements in symptoms. Ketamine can be administered in various ways, which you can learn more about below.

Why Ketamine-Assisted Therapy?
While research into ketamine treatment is ongoing, it is known that ketamine works primarily on the GABA receptor, indirectly influencing the neurotransmitter glutamate, often referred to as the brain's "fertilizer." This process leads to the production of a critical growth factor that aids in the repair of neurons damaged by stress and mental illness.
After a ketamine treatment, this mechanism creates a "neuroplastic window," a period during which the brain is particularly receptive to change. This window provides an opportunity for individuals to make shifts in internal patterns and behaviors that previously felt difficult or stuck. Ketamine treatment can improve mood within hours to days and support the regeneration of nerve cells over time. I often discuss with clients the importance of "seizing the neuroplastic window" after a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) session. The changes made during this period are more likely to become lasting, helping the brain and body establish new, more adaptive patterns.

Why is therapy crucial in Ketamine-Assisted Therapy?
Safe Environment to Explore
Having a therapist present to create a safe and supportive space for you has been shown to help in several ways. As your therapist, I can help you manage any intense or challenging emotions that arise during the experience and help with integrating your newfound insights into your everyday life.
Preparing you for What’s to Come
The preparation for KAP is a major contributing factor for the quality of the ketamine experience and the therapeutic outcomes. Preparation can include discussing intentions for the sessions, addressing fears and concerns, and helping to build a supportive mindset for the experience ahead.

Ongoing Monitoring and Support
Having me present allows for ongoing monitoring of your mental health throughout treatment. I can help you assess your progress, adjust the treatment plan as needed, and provide additional resources or support when necessary. This ongoing therapeutic support can also prevent potential risks or challenges that may arise during your ketamine treatment.
Ketamine’s Effects Enhance Therapy
Ketamine promotes a time-out from your ordinary way of thinking, relief from negative thought processes, and an expansiveness of self in the larger sense. These effects enhance your ability to engage in meaningful psychotherapy during and after ketamine administration.
Therapy Improves Results of Ketamine
Studies have shown that working with a trained psychedelic-assisted therapist, like myself, throughout ketamine treatment can lead to stronger and longer-lasting results. Because the window of time during ketamine treatments can be a crucial aid to changing your habits and thought patterns, exploring your feelings and goals can be especially effective during this time.
Therapy Can Help you Get to the Root of It
Revisiting the past can be hard, especially if you’ve been through trauma or suffered from PTSD. Ketamine can make this smoother, and having a trained guide to help you navigate these waters, can help you feel safe to address and heal your core wounds and find greater mental stability.

Here Are Your KAP Options at Courageous You
Individual Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
I specialize in working with LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and non-monogamous individuals navigating depression, anxiety, PTSD, adjustment disorders, and identity-related concerns. My ketamine-assisted therapy integrates the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach, offering a safe space to explore and heal deep emotional patterns. Treatment typically includes 2–4 prep sessions, 6–8 dosing sessions (spaced 2-4 weeks apart), and integration sessions after each dose. While I focus on these communities, I welcome clients from all backgrounds ready for meaningful, transformative healing.
Ketamine-Assisted Relationship Therapy
I work with all types of relationships—couples, polycules, adult family members, friendships, relationship anarchists, and life partners—to heal and strengthen connection. Using ketamine-assisted therapy alongside the Gottman Method, CBT, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), I support clients in uncovering emotional patterns, improving communication, and rebuilding trust. Ketamine can deepen emotional insight, creating space for healing and mutual growth in a supportive, safe, and non-judgmental environment.
Group Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
I offer virtual ketamine-assisted therapy (KAP) in small groups of up to 4 participants, where the healing power of community enhances the therapeutic experience. Group KAP combines ketamine’s transformative effects with shared insight and support, helping participants reframe beliefs, reduce isolation, and foster a deep sense of belonging. I run short- and long-term groups for LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and non-monogamous individuals, and also offer private group sessions. Group work is a more affordable option—and a powerful one. Learn more by scheduling your free consultation.
Self-Led Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
Self-led ketamine-assisted therapy offers a more affordable option for those seeking the benefits of KAP while maintaining the guidance of a therapist. These sessions give you the flexibility to navigate your ketamine experience at home, with me (Sarah) checking in before and after each dose to monitor vitals and provide support. You’ll still engage in preparation and integration sessions as part of the program—so while you’re in charge of your journey, you won’t be navigating it alone. Learn more about self-led KAP by scheduling your free consultation.

Journey Clinical
I am a Journey Clinical KAP Provider. This means that I deliver KAP in my practice in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical, which has a specialized medical team that determines medical eligibility for KAP, prescribes ketamine lozenges, and supports me in monitoring health outcomes. In my work with Journey Clinical, we exclusively use the sublingual lozenge form of ketamine administration. This involves dissolving a small tablet in your mouth, swishing it for 12 minutes, and then spitting it out.
Medical intake and follow ups with Journey Clinical as well as the dosing sessions with me are mostly not covered by insurance, but they are eligible for out of network reimbursement. Here’s a breakdown of the expected costs of treatment.
